When he returned to the United States he joined the Army, then entered the Reserves and started selling bonds on Wall Street. It didn't take long to realize that no matter how brilliant his sales numbers were, he would never get the big promotions. Thorsen, now Thorsen saved assiduously, sold his apartment for tuition money and applied to the baccalaureate program for adult students at the College of General Studies at Columbia University.
